Cory Band has presented its annual awards in two categories – Player of the Year and Bandsperson of the Year. These have been awarded since 2009 and are decided by a vote amongst band members.

The 2023 Player of the Year was announced as Principal Eb Tuba Tommy Tynan. In only his first full calendar year with the band Tommy has made a big impact amongst his peers, appearing many times as a soloist and wowing audiences at home and abroad. Apart from one COVID-enforced absence he also maintained a 100% attendance record throughout the year, and has further developed his creativity by playing his own music in concerts.

Commenting on his award Tommy said: “It’s a huge honour to be voted as the 2023 Player of the Year at Cory Band. It’s extremely humbling to be appreciated in this way by my friends and peers, especially considering the quality of players I get to share the stage with. I’m really looking forward to continuing our positive momentum into the rest of 2024.

Winning the Bandsperson of the Year award for the second time was Steve Jones, Cory’s phenomenal drum kit player. This award is presented to the person their colleagues think has been the best team-member throughout the year and, as well as his excellence amongst the percussion section, Steve also plays a large part in the logistics operation of Cory Band.

Steve commented: “To say I was surprised but elated to win the band member of the year award for a second time is certainly an understatement. But the fact that this award comes from your colleagues makes it very special.”
