Cory Band and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama are very proud to announce the launch of the RWCMD Cory Band Composition Prize which further strengthens the bond between Cardiff’s music conservatoire and its Brass Band in Residence.
This will be an annual award, the winner of which will be decided in a Gala Concert in the Dora Stoutzker Hall at RWCMD on 23 May 2015. On that night, a chosen shortlist of three pieces will be performed by the Cory Band in the first-half of a concert, after which a panel of judges comprising Philip Harper, Dr Robert Childs, Kevin Price and John Hardy, will decide the winning piece. This will be announced and performed again in the second half of the concert.
The winning piece will be performed and recorded by Cory and will be published by Wright and Round Music Publishers, and the winner will receive £250 in cash, kindly donated by Kapitol Promotions, and a trophy.
The competition is open to all, although the brass band composing unit has been made a part of the postgraduate composition syllabus at the college, and as well as being eligible for the prize, RWCMD postgraduates will enter the piece into their final examination portfolios.
Musical Director of Cory Band, Philip Harper said: “I am delighted to be able to launch this project in collaboration with RWCMD and I hope it will result in some exciting new works for brass band. Our brief is quite specific, and is targeted to encourage composers to think about the brass band’s target audience, without being creatively too restrictive. Our planned Gala night at the college next May should be a very prestigious occasion at which to make the inaugural award.”
Head of Brass and Percussion at RWCMD, Kevin Price said: “We are proud to be associated with Cory and to be able to support this new enterprise which will further the development and promotion of brass band composition and performance at the highest possible level.”
Entry forms, which contain details of the brief, can be downloaded below, or alternatively, please email Philip Harper at philip@philipharper.co.uk.
