New Cornet Signing at Cory

At the Brangwyn Hall on Sunday 19 March, Cory Band bid farewell to Ffion Haf Morris from the 3rd cornet seat, which she had held since 2021. Musical Director Philip Harper said: “We thank Ffion for her hard work and commitment to Cory Band. She’s been an excellent member and we will remember her fondly, not least as she will continue to provide the voice for our Doctor Who set which we continue to feature in our concerts throughout 2023!”

Taking over the seat is Rhys Evans, transferring from Ebbw Valley Band. Rhys is a 1st-year student at the RWCMD having begun his playing in West Wales with the Goodwick Band. Philip commented: “It was very clear to me during the audition process for the seat that Rhys is a very special talent indeed. I’m delighted to be able to welcome him to the band, and I look forward to being part of his future development, which is sure to be exciting.”

Rhys’s departure from Ebbw Valley Band drew warm words from the group: “After a great weekend for Ebbw Valley, the time has come for us to bid farewell to Rhys as he embarks on the next stage of his banding career, taking up his seat at The Cory Band. Rhys has been instrumental as principal and assistant principal cornet in our recent success at Wychavon, the Welsh Open and Welsh Regional contests. We’re sad to see him go but with his talent and ability, we’re in no doubt he has a very bright future ahead of him. We’re very happy to have been a part of his banding career here in South Wales, he’s been a great member of the band.

“We wish Rhys every success for his move to Cory and his continued studies at RWCMD and look forward to seeing him progress further.

“Rhys, you will always have a warm welcome amongst your many friends at Ebbw Valley. Huge congratulations on securing your seat with the mighty Cory Band, we’re all very proud of you, enjoy every minute!”
