There has been much recent activity regarding the flugel horn position in the Cory Band. The band’s regular flugel horn player Richard Davies has unfortunately been indisposed for the last five weeks with a very painful prolapsed disc in his back, with the prognosis still unclear. At the recent Welsh Regional contest cornet player Stephanie Wilkins covered on flugel, drawing comments from the press such as: “The magic moment of the performance was when Stephanie Wilkins soared up to her top A with so much emotional intensity – beautiful.” (Paul Hindmarsh, writing in British Bandsman magazine).
In Richard’s continued absence, Cory Band has invited Helen Williams from Foden’s Band to deputise at the forthcoming European Championships. Helen toured Australia with Cory on flugel in 2013 and Musical Director Philip Harper commented: “Helen has an already established relationship with the Cory Band and I’m very grateful to her for helping out again in this manner. She is, of course, a great player.”
The band would like to wish Richard a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in the bandroom after his recuperation.
Finally, and contrary to recent items in the press, the band would like to confirm its continued endorsement of the Courtois flugel horn. The band enjoys a fruitful relationship with instrument manufacturer Buffet Crampon, which owns both the Courtois and Besson brands.
