Christmas Day at the Brangwyn Hall

tomWe had presents galore on Sunday 22nd March att the first contest of the 2015 contesting season, in which Cory retained the prized title of Champion Band of Wales and brought the total times that this contest has been won to 31. The test piece for the contest was Peter Graham’s beautifully lyrical work ‘The Torchbearer’ which features many of the great Eric Ball’s great works such as Resurgam, High Peak, Tournament for Brass and Sinfonietta the ‘Wayfarer’.

Cory started an intense period of rehearsals two weeks prior to the contest with the aim of retaining the title and also qualification for the 2016 Europeans Championships in Lille. In such a demanding piece it was full of lyrical solos and there where some notable contributions from Principal Cornet Tom Hutchinson, who went on to secure ‘Best instrumentalist’ and Cory’s Bass section led by Principal Eb bass Simon Howells, who along with Kate James, Rob Nicholson & Tim Evans won the new prize donated in memory of the great Cory stalwart John Trotman for ‘Best Bass Section’
